An Unstable Explosive
By the middle of the nineteenth century, chemists had discovered that nitroglycerin was a vastly more powerful explosive than traditional gunpowder — and vastly more dangerous to handle. The liquid compound could detonate from a jolt, a temperature change, or seemingly no provocation at all, making it nearly unusable for practical mining, tunneling, or construction work despite its obvious power. The Swedish chemist and industrialist Alfred Nobel, whose family had built a business manufacturing explosives and armaments, understood the commercial potential of nitroglycerin better than almost anyone — and paid a devastating personal price for pursuing it. In 1864, an explosion at the Nobel family's factory outside Stockholm killed several people, including Alfred's younger brother Emil. The tragedy did not turn Nobel away from explosives research; if anything, it sharpened his determination to find a way to make nitroglycerin safe enough to use reliably.
Taming the Explosive
Nobel's breakthrough came from an unglamorous, almost accidental observation. He found that nitroglycerin could be absorbed into an inert, porous, clay-like material called kieselguhr (diatomaceous earth), forming a stable paste that could be safely shipped, handled, and stored, yet still detonated reliably and powerfully when triggered with a blasting cap of his own design. Nobel patented this stabilized explosive in 1867 under the name dynamite, from the Greek word for power. It was, in effect, the first practical, transportable high explosive that ordinary workers — not just specially trained chemists — could handle with reasonable safety.
The commercial and industrial impact was immediate and enormous. Dynamite made large-scale mining operations, railway tunneling through solid rock, and major canal and road construction dramatically faster and cheaper than they had been with gunpowder or nothing at all. Nobel built an international network of manufacturing companies to produce and sell dynamite across Europe and beyond, and within a relatively short span of years he had become one of the wealthiest industrialists in Europe, holding patents not only on dynamite but on a range of related explosive and chemical innovations over the course of his career.
"The Merchant of Death Is Dead"
Nobel's wealth and his invention's destructive potential followed him for the rest of his life, and a widely repeated — though not fully documented — story from 1888 is often credited with prompting the most consequential decision of his later years. According to the popularly told account, a French newspaper mistakenly published Alfred Nobel's obituary instead of that of his brother Ludvig, who had actually died; the obituary is said to have condemned Alfred under a harsh headline along the lines of "The Merchant of Death Is Dead," casting him primarily as a man who had grown rich by making it easier for armies to kill one another. Historians note that the exact newspaper, headline, and circumstances of this story are not conclusively documented, and it should be treated as a widely circulated account rather than an established fact. Whatever the precise truth of the episode, it is consistent with the broader, well-documented reality that Nobel was troubled by how his invention, developed for mining and construction, was increasingly being put to military use, and by the prospect that his legacy might be remembered chiefly for destruction.
The Will That Redefined His Legacy
Whatever combination of motives drove him, Nobel's final will, signed in 1895, less than a year before his death, directed the bulk of his considerable fortune toward funding annual prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace — awards intended to honor those who had conferred "the greatest benefit to mankind." The will surprised and initially troubled some of Nobel's own relatives, who contested aspects of it, and it took several years of legal and administrative work before the first Nobel Prizes were finally awarded in 1901. The peace prize in particular reads, in hindsight, as a pointed answer to the "merchant of death" characterization, whether or not that specific obituary story is accurate in its details — an explosives manufacturer choosing, in his final act, to endow the world's most prestigious prize for advancing peace.
Building an Explosives Empire
It is worth remembering that Nobel was not merely a wealthy chemist who happened to feel guilty; he was a genuinely prolific inventor and businessman who held over three hundred patents across his career and built an industrial empire spanning multiple countries. Dynamite's core innovation — stabilizing a dangerously unpredictable explosive into a form ordinary workers could use safely — reshaped how quickly and cheaply humans could reshape the physical landscape, from railway tunnels through the Alps to major mining operations across multiple continents. That transformative, largely constructive legacy existed well before and independently of the prizes that today bear his name.
A Legacy in Two Parts
Alfred Nobel died in December 1896, having spent his final years quietly working out the mechanics of a philanthropic legacy that would ultimately eclipse, in public memory, the explosives business that had made it possible. Today the Nobel Prizes are among the most prestigious honors in the world, awarded annually to scientists, writers, and peacemakers, while dynamite itself has been largely superseded by other industrial explosives. The two halves of Nobel's legacy — the man who made explosives safe enough for the modern world to build with, and the man whose fortune now funds the world's most famous peace prize — remain, in a sense, permanently entangled, each part inseparable from an understanding of the other.
