On September 19, 1991, two German hikers, Helmut and Erika Simon, were descending a trail in the Otztal Alps, near the border between Austria and Italy, when they noticed a brownish shape protruding from melting glacial ice. At first glance it looked like ordinary alpine litter, or perhaps the remains of a lost climber. It was, in fact, a human body that had lain frozen and undisturbed in the ice for more than five thousand years — the oldest and best-preserved naturally mummified human ever found, and a discovery that would transform what archaeologists knew about life in Copper Age Europe.

A Body Mistaken for a Modern Accident

Because the corpse was so unusually well preserved, with skin, hair, and clothing largely intact, both the hikers and the mountain rescue personnel initially called to the scene assumed they had found a recently deceased climber, one of the not-infrequent fatalities in that stretch of the Alps. Recovery efforts over the following days were consequently rough by archaeological standards: rescue workers used a jackhammer and, in at least one documented instance, damaged the body and surrounding materials while trying to free it from the ice, unaware of what they were actually handling. Only once the remains were removed and examined more closely did it become clear that the tools, clothing, and equipment found with the body belonged to no modern hiker.

The true age of the find became apparent through radiocarbon dating, which placed the man's death at roughly 3300 BCE, squarely within the Copper Age, making him more than five thousand years old at the time of his discovery. The body, quickly nicknamed "Ötzi" after the Otztal valley where he was found, is today recognized as the oldest known natural human mummy in the world, preserved by the accident of being frozen quickly after death and then sealed beneath glacial ice for millennia.

An Unprecedented Window into Daily Life

What made Ötzi extraordinary was not only his age but the sheer completeness of what survived alongside him. He was found with a remarkably full set of clothing and equipment: a cloak woven from grass, garments and shoes made from various animal hides, and a bearskin cap. His equipment included a copper-bladed axe, a rare and valuable object for the period that indicates a degree of status or skill, along with a wood-handled dagger, a quiver of arrows, an unfinished longbow, and a small kit of tools and materials likely used for tasks such as fire-starting and repairs.

Analysis of Ötzi's remains extended far beyond what he carried. Examination of his stomach and intestinal contents revealed the last meals he had eaten, including meat from an ibex, a wild alpine goat, and grains such as einkorn wheat, giving researchers a direct, physical record of Copper Age diet rarely available from any other source. Researchers also identified more than sixty tattoos on his skin, simple lines and crosses made by rubbing charcoal into small cuts, positioned over joints and areas that showed signs of degenerative wear — a pattern that has led some researchers to suggest the markings may have served a therapeutic or medicinal purpose rather than a purely decorative one, though the exact intent remains uncertain.

The Arrowhead and a Cold Case

For years after the discovery, researchers debated how Ötzi had died, initially favoring theories of exposure or accident in the high mountains. That changed in 2001, when a CT scan of the body revealed a flint arrowhead lodged in his left shoulder, still embedded near a major blood vessel, an injury that had gone unnoticed in earlier examinations. Further study identified an unhealed cut on one of his hands, suggesting a close-quarters struggle in the days shortly before his death, along with traces of blood from more than one other individual found on his weapons and clothing.

The combined evidence pointed to a violent end rather than a simple accident: Ötzi appears to have been shot from behind and either bled to death from the wound or died shortly after collapsing in the snow, quite possibly following a physical confrontation involving more than one person. Precisely who killed him, and why, remains unknown and likely unknowable, but the case stands as perhaps the oldest violent death investigated with something approaching forensic rigor, giving archaeologists a rare, specific human story rather than an abstract account of Copper Age conflict.

What Ötzi Revealed About the Copper Age

Beyond the circumstances of his death, Ötzi's remains reshaped scholarly understanding of technology and daily life in Europe five thousand years ago. His copper axe offered direct physical evidence of metalworking technology's spread into the Alpine region during this transitional period between the Stone and Bronze Ages. Genetic analysis of his remains and gut contents has since offered researchers insight into his ancestry, health conditions, and even the pathogens he carried, including evidence of a stomach bacterium and joint conditions consistent with a physically demanding life in mountainous terrain.

A Mummy at Rest, At Last

Otzi's body is preserved today at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, Italy, housed in a specially refrigerated chamber designed to replicate the glacial conditions that preserved him for so many millennia, and viewable to the public through a small window. More than three decades after two hikers mistook him for a modern casualty of the mountains, Ötzi remains one of archaeology's most closely studied individuals — a single Copper Age life, violently ended, that continues to answer questions no written record from his era could ever have preserved.
